We just finished designing and publishing the Made in YCN exhibition guide, part of the London Design Festival. The exhibition saw an invited group of creative talents producing new objects for an exclusive show and sale at 72 Rivington Street, the physical home of YCN.

We agreed on an 8 page a6 booklet format, allowing the guide to double as labels for each exhibit and to fold out into an a3 spread. Here’s some images of the print run, fresh off our riso:

There was a running theme, whether unintentional or not, within the exhibition; each product was a quirky take on traditional objects: windmills; doorknobs; skimming stones; tables; bags and pencils. We wanted to reference the history behind each of these objects and produced a mini encyclopedia on the back of the guide with various facts and ‘QI’ points related to the products.

Here is a QI point for you: There exists a common urban legend claiming that the Americans spent $11 million developing the Space Pen, and the Russians used a pencil. Plausible this story maybe, it is not true, because of the danger that a broken-off pencil tip poses in zero gravity and the flammable nature of the wood present in pencils a better solution was needed.
